How I Read Your Mind

How I Read Your Mind

How you do anything is how you do everything

I have no idea who first said that but it’s pretty bloody profound. I think you can watch someone, zoom in on almost any small action they do throughout their day, and it’ll tell you who they are.

And if it’s true of other people it means it’s also true of you.

If you don’t bother tidying up after yourself around the house because someone else will do it, or if you’re rude to someone during a seemingly insignificant interaction, what does that say about who you are in other, “more important” areas of life?

It probably says quite a lot.

What does this have to do with fitness?

Well, a training session is a perfect environment to learn about a person’s character. As a trainer you need to be a student of personalities, and I can tell within the first session who is going to excel and smash their goals… and who needs an attitude adjustment.

I’ll go one further, I can tell within the first rep of the first set.

The person who watches and listens intently to my demonstration of the exercise, the person who is fully present and engaged during the set, and who pushes until I tell them to stop, that person will inevitably succeed. It is literally guaranteed.

But the person who tunes out a little because, in their mind, they already “know how to squat”? The person who reduces tries to cheat on the exercise when they think I won’t notice, or stops a couple of reps short because it’s starting to hurt? I know that I need to do a lot more mindset work with that client if they’re going to get anywhere.

In fact, until they fix that attitude, the sets and reps and exercises barely matter.

People can change and improve, that’s what we’re all about at Evolve. But that one set, tells me who they are, in that moment. It’s like mind reading.

So now that you know it, do you want to change it?

Well, here’s a great article on our blog about how to do the perfect rep.
